After five years of as the apprentice to a surly Black Knight affectionately named Rizz, Artamos De'spada travels north on a trial mission that will bring him to the climax of his training in the king's secretive Black

Artamos's mission is simple; escort of the king's betrothed safely from the Cromanian boarder to Caltania. It's a five day quest in which Artamos is required to lead , and the adventure starts early when disaster strikes the trio just before meeting up with Leona's coach.
Artamos and his two formidable companions are forced into a defensive posture. And caught off guard, they are sorely pressed, especially when one of their group abandons them. Artamos is distraught and struggles to maintain control of his emotions, even when the companion returns to camp, bringing with her a secret fantasy that she will keep hidden from Artamos for the remainder of the trip.
The disaster marks the first of many failures for the apprentice on his quest to becoming a full fledged knight. And the adventure quickens when Artamos finally meets the king's beautiful betrothed. And with the king no where around, Artamos finds it difficult not to think of the beautiful woman. Unfortunately for Artamos, Leona shares his affliction.
This new development only serves as an emotional distraction to the young man's quest to become a Black Knight. But Artamos forges ahead with his adventure, taking command of Leona's armed escort despite the protest of an older knight assigned to Leona's safety.
Once on track and moving south, Artamos manages to put his fantasy aside, he no longer considers Leona. That is, until the young woman visits him at his campfire on the first evening of the trip. Things heat up quickly and Artamos is later reminded to take care in her presence, a lesson Artamos struggles to remember.
The adventure of the apprentice continues with bandit attacks and a betrayel from within that nearly costs Artamos everything.

This is a pretty good book. Correction: this could have been a pretty good book. Here’s why.The Apprentice is what you might call a Sword and Sorcery genre book. It involves three swashbucklers that belong to the Black Knights, elite fighters sort of like the Musketeers of Alexander Dumas fame. They are given the task of escorting the future queen of their kingdom to the royal palace across bandit-filled territory. The three main characters are Artamos, the apprentice Black Knight, who is the main character, Falita, a female fighter, and Adrian Rizzo, referred to as “Rizz,” who is the mentor to Artamos. Here’s what I liked about the book:
It is a plausible story with a well-defined storyline. The author doesn’t try to cover too much with the story, which allows time to develop the characters. That’s the other thing I like; believable, likeable characters. Each has their flaws and their strengths. Artamos is the naive, idealistic beginner. Rizz is the wise, quiet mentor. And Falita is a terrific fighter, who has a rough past and a weakness for trinkets.
The story is over before they arrive at the castle, and doesn’t end up where you suspect it will, although one twist I did figure out. The book is also really just an episode, clocking in at about 36,000 words. But it is the first in a series, that I look forward to reading.
So here’s the bad news: It truly, desperately, is in need of an editor. I caught numerous typos in here, including use of the wrong word, grammatical, punctuation and other issues. For many people it might not be a problem. But being an indie author myself, I know how sensitive readers of indie novels are to typos. Further, the beginning chapter is muddled. For a while I wondered if there were four knights, because at one point the author refers to Adrian, and in the next paragraph refers to Rizz. It’s pretty nigh impossible for an author to have the objectivity necessary to catch stuff like that, and I speak to myself as I say that, because when you’re a bare bones indie author, it’s hard to justify the bucks necessary to hire an editor. But here it was extremely necessary.
It’s a fun story, and once I got past the first chapter, I enjoyed reading it. At 36,000 words, it was a very fast read. And those who are interesting in checking it out will be pleased to note that the ebook is available on Amazon for FREE. The second book in this series is already out, so I will be reading it soon.

Writing style is excellent and intriguing.
Details and descriptive characteristics of scenes and events that took place was very attention grabbing, found I could not put this book down until finished! Look forward to future writings by this author.
Compelling characterization and sharp dialogue. Hall quickly and efficiently introduces you to his characters and the situation they're in, then brings on a burst of action. I've seen books on the Barnes & Noble shelves much less expertly written. Get this man a publishing contract.
I have not had much time for reading lately, but due to a recent employment change I have found some extra time to enjoy it. The author has very skillfully written a story that leads Artamos on a journey to become a black knight. The trials and tribulations he faces are overwhelming. I personally found myself totally tied up in the battles he fought as they are so detailed I could almost feel the blows myself. With the way this ended, I can hardly wait for the sequel! If you have some time to yourself give this one a look. You will not regret it!
I think it was OK, but not more. However, I think I will give Hall another chance, and read one more in the series.
My biggest problem, was that I just didn't feel like I got to know the characters. There was a lot of time spent describing fights in detail, but not much character building. Maybe the book should have been longer, or focused on just one character.
Much of it was also a bit too cliché for me. The Lancelot and Gwenivere-story has been done a couple of times before.
Pretty good world-building, interesting storyline (without a stock villain, which is an excellent thing), and believably flawed characters. But this one has something of a we-destroyed-the-village-to-save-it feel, [SPOILER ALERT] with honorable knights destroying their personal honor to protect that of their organization.[END SPOILER] The ending twist has such a perfect set-up that the twist is the only ending possible. One star subtracted for poor proofreading; if a new edition is released, I'll revisit it and edit the review. For now, three stars.

He is yet young, and so he must complete this journey to prove himself to the King if he wants the honor of becoming a full Black Knight. This journey brings him down a road lined with alliance and conflict, love and despair, trust and disbelief. This book offers a story that is creative, historical, and skillfully crafted. Thick with just the right amounts of drama and danger, every chapter left me wanting more. The cliffhanger at the end? Yea, I'm buying the sequel.
The Apprentice is an engaging historical account of young Artamos who is an apprentice Black Knight . Artamos must prove himself worthy of knighthood by successfully completing his trial. From the start I found myself drawn into the rich history of the era and connecting with the characters as they travel by horse and carriage to deliver the soon to be Queen. As the tale unfolds the struggles and challenges Artamos and his group faces prove that he is a creative, resourceful and a worthy leader destined to become a full fledged Black Knight.
